VRFA Blotter: February 8-14, 2021

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 271 calls for service for the week of February 8-14, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 1,632 calls.  This is a -.9% decrease from 2020 (1,646).

Call Breakdown:

198 (73%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 1,218 (-3.1%, compared to 2020’s 1,257).

11 (4%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 110%, with 2021 having 42 calls and 2020 having 20.

62 (23%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is up (.8%), with 2021 currently at 372 calls compared to 2020’s 369. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

COVID-19 Testing Site

Specially trained VRFA EMTs assisted the King County Health Department in COVID-19 testing drive-up and walk-up residents at the GSA Complex. This site administered approximately 1,500 tests between February 8-15, 2021. Approximately 7% were positive. This approximate 7-day positivity rate is a 3% decrease from the previous week (February 1-7, 2021) 7-day positivity rate of 10%.

The positivity rate of the C St SW testing site and the City of Auburn’s positivity rate are two different things. The City of Auburn’s positivity rate* for the past 14 days is 18.3%, a 2.0% decrease since last week’s 14-day positivity rate check (20.3%). The C St SW testing site does not impact the positivity rate of the City of Auburn.

Specially Trained VRFA EMTs assisted the King County Health Department in administering COVID-19 vaccines at the GSA Complex. Two lanes of the C St SW testing site will be dedicated to vaccination appointments, meaning the location is now both a COVID-19 testing location and one of two South King County mass COVID-19 vaccine locations. Please note – vaccines are available by appointment only.

Calls for Service:

  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Monday, January 8 at 7:46 a.m., firefighters assisted a male who was having a seizure. The patient was treated on scene and then transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Submerged Vehicle Recovery: (Kent) On Tuesday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m., VRFA and Renton
    divers located a submerged vehicle in 20’ of water, while on a training dive at Lake Fenwick. Divers successfully secured a tow cable to the vehicle for removal.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Tuesday, February 9 at 8:45 p.m., firefighters assisted an adult male with gunshot wounds to the lower extremities. Firefighters and King County Medic One treated the patient. King County Medic One transported the patient to Harborview Medical Center.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday February 10 at 9:45 a.m., firefighters responded with police and medics to a possible shooting victim. Firefighters arrived to find an adult male had been stabbed during a road rage incident. His wounds were bandaged and he was transported to a local hospital by a VRFA aid unit.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Thursday, February 11 at 8:56 a.m., firefighters assisted an elderly female complaining of confusion. The patient was treated by firefighters and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Vehicle Fire: (Auburn) On Friday, February 12 at 5:33 p.m., firefighters responded to a motor home on fire. The fire was extinguished by firefighters and there was no damage to surrounding
    exposures.
  • Small House Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, February 13 at 1:10 p.m., firefighters responded with
    police and medics to a domestic violence call that escalated to a hostage situation and a small room and contents fire. VRFA personnel and King County Medic One evaluated an adult female and her child that were involved in the incident. They both had minor injuries and were left with family. After the suspect was placed in the custody of Auburn Police, they discovered that the home was charged with smoke. Firefighters entered the structure and found smoldering materials in a bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished. The scene was then turned over to the VRFA Fire Marshal and Auburn Police for investigation.
  • Car Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, February 13 at 7:36 p.m., VRFA units were called to report of a car fire near “C” street and Highway 18. VRFA units arrived to find an abandoned vehicle fully involved in fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire and the scene was turned over to Auburn Police for investigation.
  • Tree in the Road: (Lakeland Hills) On Sunday, February 14, at 10:10 a.m., firefighters investigated a report of a tree blocking one lane of Lakeland Hills Way. Firefighters blocked traffic and removed the tree.

Fire Investigations:

  • FMO hosted the second week of a regional fire investigation training class instructed by ATF.
    Demonstrations of fire behavior and investigation processes were presented to the class.
  • On Saturday February 8, there was a small garage fire that was extinguished by the home owner. FM333 was dispatched and investigated the scene. The dollar loss was estimated to be $500.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
