VRFA Blotter: December 28 2020-January 3, 2021

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 231 calls for service for the week of December 28, 2020-January 3, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 97 calls.  This is a -8.5% decrease from 2020 (106).

Call Breakdown:

174 (75%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 70 (-12.5% compared to 2020’s 80).

6 (3%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 100%, with 2021 having 4 calls and 2020 having 2.

51 (22%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is also up (-4.2%), with 2021 currently at 23 calls compared to 2020’s 24. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

COVID-19 Testing Site

Specially trained VRFA EMTs assisted the King County Health Department in COVID-19 testing drive-up and walk-up residents at the GSA facility. This site administered approximately 4,000 tests between December 29,2020-January 3, 2021. 15.28% were positive. This is a 2.4% increase from last week.

The positivity rate of the C St SE testing site and the City of Auburn’s positivity rate (24.8% for the past 14 days – a 3.3% increase from last week) are two different things. The C St SE testing site does not impact the positivity rate of the City of Auburn.

Calls for Service:

  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, December 28 at 09:14 a.m., firefighters
    responded to a two vehicle collision on a residential street. One vehicle had moderate front-end
    damage with air bag deployment. One patient had minor aches but did not require further care at
    a hospital.
  • Aid Call: (Pacific) On Thursday, December 29 at 06:50 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult
    female complaining of abdominal pain. The patient was treated by firefighters and transported to
    Multicare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, December 30, at 11:57 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a
    middle-aged patient who experienced a possible seizure while operating his motor vehicle. The
    patient was able to drive his vehicle into a grassy area between Hwy 167 and Hwy 18, without
    damage to his or any other vehicle. The patient was uninjured, did not want to seek further medical
    attention, and was picked up by his wife at the scene.
  • Car Accident: (Pacific) On Thursday, December 31 at 11:51 a.m., firefighters responded to a car
    accident on Ellingson Rd near Highway 167. Multiple patients were evaluated and none had
    injuries. Firefighters assisted the Pacific Police Department with scene safety and traffic control.
  • House Fire: (Algona) On Friday, January 1 at 2:55 a.m., firefighters responded to a house fire in
    the City of Algona. First arriving crews aggressively attacked the fire that was located on the
    second floor. Eleven people were displaced and the fire is under investigation.
  • House Fire: (Auburn) On Friday, January 1 at 4:02 a.m., firefighters responded to a house fire in
    South Auburn. Flames were extending from multiple windows when initial crews arrived. Crews
    were able to protect multiple exposures and get a quick knock down of the fire. Three people
    were displaced and the fire is under investigation.
  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Saturday, January 2 at 2:57 p.m., firefighters responded to a
    vehicle vs. bicycle accident. One patient was found lying on the edge of the road. The patient was
    evaluated for minor injuries and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center via Aid331.
  • Tree Over Roadway: (Auburn) On Sunday, January 3 at 08:20 a.m., firefighters responded to a
    tree in the roadway on West Valley Highway just north of SR18. Firefighters used a chainsaw to
    clear the tree from the roadway.

VRFA Fire Investigations:

    • On Friday, January 1, an accidental fire occurred at a single-family residence in the 200 block
      of 6th Ave N in the City of Algona. The fire occurred as a result of improper clearance on a heating device installation. Dollar loss is estimated at $150,000.
    • On Friday, January 1, a residential fire occurred in the 100 G St SE. The occupants were alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm and were able to evacuate. The fire originated in a garbage bag on the front porch area and extended to the first floor living space, bedroom,and attic. The cause of the fire was due to discarded firework and smoking materials. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $280,000.

  • 3 enrollments closedOf note, one of the enrollments closed was the VRFA’s highest utilizer for 2020, with 64
    responses. This patient has been enrolled with CARES since May of 2020, with over 46 hours of
    case management time spent. This patient’s case has been extremely complicated and at times
    frustrating, but the end result is the patient is finally moving to a higher level of care at an adult
    family home.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
