The City of Auburn and Mary Olson Farm are pleased to welcome the 2019 Mary Olson Farm Artist in Residence – Elise Koncsek!
The farm’s unique and beautiful setting will be an ideal place for the artist to draw inspiration, engage with the community, and create a body of work exploring “the intersection of potential, circumstance, and technology.”

Elise Koncsek specializes in interactive and immersive art. She uses rich colors, crisp details and text liberally on wood, acrylic, and fiber. The artist states “I want my art to pack a punch, both visually and emotionally, because many of my most influential memories are of experiences which both awed me visually and challenged me psychologically. Those moments stay with me, and continue to direct my day to day choices. Following the lead of my artistic and revolutionary heroes, I want to use my growing skills as an artist to make a positive impact, and share forward the feeling of wonder and possibility I have gained from others.”

The Mary Olson Farm Artist in Residence is a City of Auburn program offering the opportunity for an artist to pursue their work in, and to be inspired by, the unique and beautiful setting of the Mary Olson Farm in Auburn, Washington. The residency lasts two months during June and July, providing the artist with a large indoor barn studio and a stipend, and includes a variety of public programming that is free and open to the public. The program was created in generous partnership with the White River Valley Museum.

2018 Artist in Residence Now on Exhibit

See breathtaking watercolors and intimate drawings by Mary Olson Farm’s 2018 Artist in Residence Michelle Lassaline. Lassaline’s experience at the Farm is reflected in a new exhibit at the White River Valley Museum entitled WATERSHED.

Last summer Lassaline spent her time painting, drawing, and exploring the historic farm. As the season changed from spring to summer she watched the animals shed their thick dark coats and the maples along the stream spread out their broad shady leaves. Each morning began with a walk through the pastures and woods, sketching and taking photographs; she spent the afternoons painting in the barn. The residency extended briefly into October so Lassaline could watch the salmon return to the Olson stream to spawn.

Each of the paintings in this new exhibit show how water filters through landscapes. Lassaline painted these detailed images in her studio using reference photos she takes while walking, hiking, and canoeing. Locations include the salmon-filled stream at the Mary Olson Farm, the wild inlets of Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior, a serene river in mid-coast Maine, Kalaloch beach on the Olympic Peninsula, the churning dam at the Ballard Locks, and the Elwha River below the dam removal site and at its sandy delta.
