Ericksen had contracted COVID-19 in November while on a non-legislative trip to El Salvador.

“We are heartbroken to share that our husband and father passed away on Friday, Dec. 17.” said Ericksen’s family in a statement shared with Senate Republicans. “Please keep our family in your prayers and thank you for continuing to respect our privacy in this extremely difficult time.”

A funeral service will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Christ the King Church, 4173 Meridian St.

Erikson was the Ranking Republican on the Senate Environment, Energy and Technology Committee. A vocal critic of Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee, he joined three fellow Republicans to found the Senate Republican’s Freedom Caucus in February 2021.

Senator Phil Fortunato (R-Auburn, 31st LD) said he was a little taken about and dumbfounded by Ericksen’s death.

“It’s tragic, the guy was one of the smartest people I know, and this floor speeches, his knowledge and environmental issues of all that stuff, was just fantastic,” said Fortunato.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Washington State Senator Doug Ericksen,” said Governor Jay Inslee in his directive.

*As a reminder, when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff or half-mast, it should first be raised to the top for an instant, then immediately lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. Prior to lowering the flag, it should be raised once more to the peak, then lowered.
