U.S. Flags to Half-Staff to Honor Sen. Harry Reid

All United States flags are to be flown at half-staff* from sunrise to sunset January 13, 2022 to honor United States Senator Harry Reid. Reid died from pancreatic cancer on December 28 at the age of 82.

Often referred to as a ‘Democrat Kingmaker,’  Reid served in the United States Senate representing Nevada from 1987 to 2017. During that time he was the Senate Democratic Caucus (2005-2017) and Senate Majority Leader (2007-2015).

President Joe Biden’s proclamation is that all U.S. flags to half-staff on the day of interment. Reid is presently lying in state in the United States Capitol and will be interned tomorrow.

Presidential Proclamation: 

“As a mark of respect for his memory, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day.  I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”

Reminder: when flying a flag at half staff the flag should be briskly run up to the top of the staff before being lowered slowly to the half-staff position.
