U.S. Flags to Half-Staff Sunday for Peace Officers Memorial Day

President Joe Biden has issued a proclamation for the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff* Sunday, May 15, 2022, in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.  Flags should remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset.

The names of 619 officers killed in the line of duty were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC in 2022. These 619 officers include 472 officers of these officers killed during 2021, 319 of these fatalities were COVID-19-related.

An additional 147 officers died in previous years (before 2021). Many of their stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now.

The 2022 National Police Week in Washington DC begins Sunday, May 15.  The National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum candlelight vigil was Friday, May 13.

Memorabilia, department patches, and challenge coins are shared and traded throughout National Police Week. Many organizations, departments, and institutions take advantage of police challenge coins to honor the bravery of fallen officers and their sacrifice in the line of duty.

In October 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15th as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. Since the signing of this proclamation, this date has been the official day of recognition for law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the performance of their duty.

The complete presidential proclamation can be read here. As a reminder, flags should remain at half-staff through May 16th for in honor of 1,000,000 Americans Lost to COVID-⁠19.

*As a reminder, when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff or half-mast, it should first be raised to the top for an instant, then immediately lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. Prior to lowering the flag, it should be raised once more to the peak, then lowered.
