U.S. Flags to Fly Half-Staff to Honor Highland Park Victims

President Biden ordered all U.S. flags to half-staff, Tuesday, as a mark of respect for the victims for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on July 4, 2022 by a gunman in Highland Park, Il during the community’s July 4th celebration.

Flags are to fly at half-staff from July 5, 2022, until sunset July 9, 2022.

Highland Park, Il Independence Day Parade Shooting

A mass shooting at a Highland Park, Il Independence Day parade left six dead and over 30 injured, officials confirmed Monday. The shooting began shortly after the parade’s start at 10:20am when the gunman sprayed the crowd with over 70 rounds from his rooftop position.

The gunman was able to initially evade capture by dressing as a woman, blending into the fleeing spectators, police said Tuesday. He was later apprehended north of the shooting scene when pulled over by a police officer. Criminal charges have not yet been filed.

Two victims have been identified by family and community members.

Jacki Sundheim, 63: The North Shore Synagogue identified Jacki, providing the following statement:

“There are no words sufficient to express the depth of our grief for Jacki’s death and sympathy for her family and loved ones,” the statement said. “We know you join us in the deepest prayer that Jacki’s soul will be bound up in the shelter of God’s wings and her family will somehow find comfort and consolation amidst this boundless grief.”

Nicolas Toledo, 78: Nicolas, a Mexican citizen, was visiting family in Highland Park and attending the parade together. A press release from Mexican officials identified Nicolas as one of the victims.

Roberto Velasco Alvarez, head of the North American Unit for Mexico’s Foreign Ministry,  confirmed in a tweet two additional injured individuals of Mexican origin were injured. “Unfortunately, we have confirmed a person of Mexican nationality who died from a gunshot wound in Highland Park, IL. Our sincere condolences to all the people who lost their lives in this attack. Also, there are two wounded of Mexican origin.

In a statement on a GoFundMe set up by the family they ask to “please keep our family and all the families of this horrible tragic in your prayers and stay strong as a community.”

*As a reminder, when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff or half-mast, it should first be raised to the top for an instant, then immediately lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. Prior to lowering the flag, it should be raised once more to the peak, then lowered.

The Auburn Examiner does not name mass shooters unless there is an immediate threat to public safety.
