All United States flags are to be flown at half-staff* from sunrise to sunset January 10-13, 2021 to honor United States Capitol Police Officers Brian D. Sicknick (42) and Howard Liebengood (51). Both officers were present when a mob of rioters attacked the United States Capitol, January 6.
Sicknick “succumbed to injuries sustained the previous day after being struck in the head with a fire extinguisher while physically engaging with [rioters] on the grounds of the United States Capitol,” states his Officer Down Memorial profile.
Capitol Police confirmed Liebengood’s January 9 death in a press release. The release did not state a cause of death, but multiple news outlets have reported Liebengood died by suicide. He does not have an Officer Down Memorial profile.

*As a reminder, when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff or half-mast, it should first be raised to the top for an instant, then immediately lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. Prior to lowering the flag, it should be raised once more to the peak, then lowered.
