The closure of all northbound lanes will begin 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20 and are expected to through 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23.

SR-167 Detours

The SR-167 closure will run  from SR-410 in Sumner to 8th Street East/Stewart Road in Pacific. During the closure, drivers will follow two signed detour routes that are specific to passenger vehicles and trucks. Backups may exceed 10 miles and drivers should expect delays of up to or more than 90 minutes on detour routes.

Note: Work is weather sensitive and could be rescheduled.

WSDOT encourages drivers to only travel if necessary. “Please avoid discretionary trips, use transit, carpool, vanpool or work from home or remote office locations,” the WSDOT travel alert states. “Travel earlier in the day or later in the evening when traffic volumes are lower. If drivers do need to use the detour routes this weekend, travelers will want to add at least 90 minutes of travel time.”

But, Why?

The planned weekend closure is for work necessary to build a northbound HOV lane.  Drivers experience regular congestion on northbound SR-167, especially during peak morning commute. This prompted WSDOT to add an additional HOV lane. Travelers on northbound SR-167 between Puyallup and Auburn experience regular congestion, especially during morning peak commute hours. To help reduce congestion, WSDOT is adding an additional northbound high occupancy vehicle lane on SR-167.

“The additional HOV lane will begin near SR-410 in Pierce County, and continue north seven miles and tie into the existing SR-167 HOT Lane near Auburn in King County,” a description of the project states. “The new northbound HOV lane will be built within the existing pavement width. This means the inside and outside shoulder widths will be reduced.”

According to WSDOT, “There are no times when it’s convenient to close northbound SR-167. We’re closing the roadway over the weekend because crews need to work where people ordinarily would drive and there’s less traffic on the weekend. During the weekend closure, construction crews will make changes to bridge drainage systems and add additional roadway surface to the existing bridge decks.”
