Seattle Mariners Chairman and Managing Partner John Stanton was the featured speaker at Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer’s April virtual “Good Eggs” meeting. The meeting provided South King County community leaders an opportunity to meet with Stanton and discuss the importance of sports in our communities.

“On any given day, it is encouraging to go into a coffee shop or grocery store and see first-generation Americans from all parts of the world wearing Griffey jerseys,” said von Reichbauer, who hosted the meeting. “Sports brings people together, it gives us something to cheer about, and these days, we need more and more reasons to cheer.”

Since taking over as Managing Partner in 2016, Stanton has been committed to the Mariners purpose to unify communities and enrich lives by sharing the love of baseball. Their mission is to win championships, create unforgettable experiences, and serve our communities.

Stanton also discussed the “Hometown 9,” a program the Mariners started last summer. The On BASE Hometown Nine is a fellowship designed to address barriers frequently encountered by student-athletes from marginalized communities, particularly those of color. The program provides access to elite-level training and competition for nine baseball and softball players, mentors from the Mariners organization and additional support to prepare young people for academic success and a future as community leaders. The inaugural Hometown 9 class includes two middle-school students from Federal Way.
