Review: Serious Soul Offers Seriously Good Soul Food

At first, Serious Soul at Cubby’s looks like an unassuming old school hamburger joint; but their menu has so much more to offer.

As the name suggests, this is a place to get some serious soul food, which can be hard to come by in the Pacific Northwest. Located at the bend in the road on Auburn Way South, Serious Soul is the place to get all your southern favorites from catfish to collard greens.

You can order at the drive up window or order inside and they will bring it out to your car. In non-COVID times, there is restaurant seating.

I had to get the chicken and waffles, while my companion ordered the fried catfish. I got three drumsticks, nicely if mildly seasoned, with my thick, belgian waffle, and plenty of honey. The catfish came with tarter sauce and crispy crinkle-cut fries, hot and fresh. We shared the mashed potatoes and the collard greens.

The mashed potatoes came with a nice thick gravy. However, the collard greens absolutely stole the show. They were well-seasoned with just a little kick. I’m not usually a fan, preferring to stuff my face with all the other delicious fried things for which southern cuisine is known, but I’m so glad that I tried them at Serious Soul.

There were so many things on this menu, too much to try on just one sitting, so I went back the next day to try the hush puppies and the cornbread. Absolutely worth the second trip. The hush puppies were crispy and delicious. Though traditionally included, they do not contain any shellfish, though that is a tthe cornbread was perfect. You could eat it for dessert or as a side – it was perfectly buttery with crispy edges. It was so tempting, it didn’t even make it home intact, in time for a picture.

The desserts rotate, so you have to ask. On offer this time were a peach cobbler and red velvet cake, which both sound like the perfect end to a soul food feast. I was too full to try any on my first or second trip, but it’s on my list for my next trip, along with the corndog and the hamburger.
