Review: Aberdeen Café, Dim Sum in Auburn

Named for a fish market in Hong Kong, Aberdeen Cafe is a delightful, unassuming spot for authentic dim sum in Auburn. Our party dined in but it’s also a popular spot for takeout

The restaurant is warm and cozy with lots of fun little touches referencing the owners’ Hong Kong roots. Even the names of the booths call back to famous Hong Kong neighborhoods and landmarks. The cafe is not named for Washington’s Aberdeen, but Hong Kong’s Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Cafe has an extensive menu including most dim sum favorites, with plenty of options for those who can’t eat shellfish like myself. The food takes some time, so you should be prepared to wait, but it’s worth it.

Two in my party enjoyed milk teas, the Hong Kong milk tea Matcha milk tea with coconut jellies. Another member of our group was more adventurous and ordered the Salted Lime 7-Up. Sparkling, a little sweet, and little briny, it came with a fermented lime. Our conclusion was that it would be good for a hangover.

We started with cream cheese wontons, which were hot and crispy with plenty of cream cheese, everything you’d want in an appetizer. Our waitress recommended the pork shiu mai with Chinese mushrooms and it didn’t disappoint.

Off the dim sum menu, we had the BBQ pork bao and shrimp dumplings. We rounded out the meal with chicken fried rice, beef short ribs with black pepper sauce, and a radish cake. The radish cake was a bit like a hashbrown composed of shaved radishes and had a nice tangy bite.

Aberdeen Cafe is a fantastic local spot for authentic dim sum. The waitstaff was friendly and knowledgeable. Prior to the pandemic, the cafe was the favorite spot for Chinese and East Asian international students attending Green River College, which speaks volumes. Unfortunately, the café lost about 90% of its business when all the international students went home. I can’t wait to go back and try more of their extensive menu.
