Congresswoman Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) today announced that she will host Issaquah High School civics teacher Jacqueline Belur as her guest to the State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. Rep. Schrier made the announcement during a Q&A session with over 100 Issaquah High social studies students. Ms. Belur, a graduate of Issaquah High School, is in her 6th year teaching civics and social studies at her alma mater.

“I’m very excited to have Jaci as my guest for the 2020 State of the Union,” said Rep. Schrier. “Government is not a spectator sport. Civics education prepares students to be informed and engaged citizens. And having a civics teacher join me in attending the long-held American tradition of the State of the Union address made so much sense. This event transcends politics and brings all three branches together for one night to consider our current circumstances and our aspirations for this country. I know Jaci will relish this experience, and her students will learn so much through her.”

Ms. Belur added, “It is an incredible honor to be invited to the State of the Union Address with Congresswoman Schrier. The importance of civic engagement, no matter party affiliation or political ideology, is something I try to instill daily in my students. As someone who has been politically active from a young age, I recognize the value of having educators that can inspire our next generation of leaders. At Issaquah High School we strive to prepare students to ‘positively impact the world and community in which they live’; a mission that I believe is best achieved by empowering an informed citizenry. I am deeply grateful for Congresswoman Schrier’s dedication to civic education in our public schools, and am proud to stand by her side representing Washington’s 8th District at the State of the Union.”
