Relay For Life South King County Goes Virtual this Saturday

Cancer patients are some of the most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic, and support is needed now more than ever.  Sadly with charity events being cancelled and budgets tightening, contributions are declining.  But this isn’t stopping the Relay For Life South King County from pushing forward with their annual event, it’ll just look a little different this year.

On Saturday, May 30, Relay For Life will be hosted online for the very first time, and organizers are hoping people will be inspired on screen, get to know some of the community organizers, and feel generous to donate to help save lives.

The virtual event will feature the opening ceremonies, survivor and caregiver celebration, a fightback ceremony, guest speakers, entertainment, and a virtual lap to honor survivors.   The moving luminaria celebration—decorated bags illuminated by candles with messaging to those who have fought cancer and won, and those who have lost the battle, will also be a part of the event.

Miss Auburn Cami Werden, whose social impact platform is The American Cancer Society: Fighting for a Cancer-Free Future, will be joining the online event to sing.  Also supporting the event with her voice is Maple Valley’s Zan Fiskum (you may know her from The Voice).

“The American Cancer Society is the largest non-governmental funder of cancer research grants in the country, and we are in trouble,” said Tom Flookes, co-chairman of the ACS Board of Directors. “We have been devastated by the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. For the first time in the 107-year history of the ACS, our mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer, is at risk.”

Last year the Relay For Life event raised over $160,000.  “Our Relay goal this year was originally $175,000 which we knew was not going to be difficult since we raised over $160,000 last year,” said  Becky Kinney, Relay For Life South King County volunteer.  “But unfortunately with Covid came a loss of donors, a loss of sponsors, and a loss of awareness.”

Relay For Life South King County is only at 18% of its total goal for the 2020 event.  Your help will ensure cancer patients get the support and information they need, and critical research continues the fight against cancer.

According to the ACS, 1.8 million people will be newly diagnosed with cancer this year.

Funds raised pay for groundbreaking research, programs, and services for people dealing with cancer.

“We need to be there with answers, support, and guidance,’ said Victoria Do, ACS organizer  “But just when these patients need us the most, we’ve had to cancel thousands of fundraising events across the country that are critical to our mission. Literally overnight, the source of nearly half of the ACS revenue vanished. Cancer can’t be postponed or cancelled, and neither can we.”

“This is a deeply gratifying event—you donate knowing you are literally saving people,” Do said. “We are also celebrating more than 5.5 million cancer survivors nationwide. It is as much a celebration of life as it is reflecting and honoring those we’ve lost. Come join us online.”

Relay For Life of South King County: The presenting sponsor is CHI Franciscan begins at noon to 1:30 pm. To sign up and view the event, www.facebook.com/RFLSouthKingCounty

Because we like to shout out Auburn organizations that support the community, our Valley Professional Fire Fighters have a team participating in Relay For Life.  This is not the first year they have participated.
