Hello, Poetry fans.  I hope you are staying warm, maybe reading some poetry by a fire, because it is cold outside.  SO COLD!

Us Pacific Northwesterners are not accustomed to lows in the teens and twenties.  However, cold temperatures can definitely help the creative juices, as long as they haven’t frozen over.  Here’s a recent one from my thoughts on the cold we are encountering right now.  Enjoy the warmth wherever you may be, and have an extra hot cocoa for me!

I Know It’s Dreary Outside
James Rodgers

It may be cold and rainy
gray clouds obscuring blue
mercury close to zero
maybe a chance of snow
in this week’s forecast
but it’s tropical in my head

Punxsutawney Phil
may have spotted his shadow
predicting six more weeks of winter
the whole month of February
still looming from the calendar
but it’s tropical in my head

I may be here in Washington
no palm trees
no pineapples
no warm sandy beaches
but when I close my eyes
I see them all
for it’s tropical in my head

My swimsuit may be buried
at the bottom of my closet
not an ounce of sunblock
in the bathroom cabinet
no plane tickets to Hawaii
Barbados
or Jamaica
in my immediate future
stuck in my apartment
for a couple more months
but it doesn’t matter one bit
because it’s tropical in my head
so hot
so nice
boozy drink on ice
yes, it’s tropical in my head
