Austin Douglas, 15, was crowned Miss Auburn’s Outstanding Teen on January 19, 2019. January’s pageant was Douglas’ first time competing with the Miss Auburn and Miss Auburn’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship program. Though Douglas admits she was shocked when she was announced as the new Miss Auburn’s Outstanding Teen, she is excited for what the next year is going to bring.

Since her crowning in January, Douglas has been active in the community and promoting her platform, Strong Against Cancer. On March 4th Mayor Nancy Backus proclaimed both Douglas and 2019 Miss Auburn Amanda Enz Goodwill Ambassadors for the City of Auburn.
We chatted with Douglas to get to know 2019’s Miss Auburn’s Outstanding Teen, and one of Auburn’s new Goodwill Ambassadors, a little bit better.

Auburn Examiner: Why did you choose to participate in the Miss Auburn and Miss Auburn’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship program?

Austin Douglas: I love the Auburn community and I’ve grown up watching the Miss Auburn Competition, and it’s always been a dream of mine to compete. The friendships and scholarship dollars and community service opportunities make it all worthwhile.

AE: What has been your most memorable moment in the program, outside of winning?

AD: The Santa parade, and activities with my “little sister, Vani” and my actual little sister, Alexis.

AE: Scotty’s General Construction has sponsored the Miss Auburn program for years. Scotty’s is owned by your Grandparents, and this year they were your sponsor. How did that feel?

AE: When did you begin your vocal training?

AD: I’ve never actually [had any] vocal training. I just picked a song I love.

AE: Is there a reason you chose ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ for your talent song?

AD: My talent song is dedicated to my platform “Strong against Cancer”

AE: What does your platform, Strong Against Cancer, mean to you?

AD: It means less invasive therapies, less terminal children, and hope for childhood cancer patients and families.

AE: Why is this platform important to you?

AD: My little sister was diagnosed with stage IV childhood cancer when she was two months old.
