In case you are concerned about spoilers, this will be a spoiler-free review of the spirit of the movie.  First, a little back story on the film, Ecco,  starting with the plot synopsis, as available on IMDB:

“A former assassin living a new life in the shadows with his family emerges from hiding to discover the origin of his lethal beginnings”

The film, written and directed by Ben Medina, was filmed right here in the Seattle area and will be released tomorrow, August 9th, 2019, with a runtime of 123 minutes. ECCO stars Tacoma-raised and UW School of Drama Lathrop Walker as the main character Michael, a former assassin now living in hiding from his former employers and trying to raise a family.

This a dark movie, with a lot of adult content and violence, so definitely get a babysitter and leave the kiddos at home for this one. And when I say dark, I mean both in the content and videography. At least on a computer screen, there are some scenes where it was hard to see what was going on in the scene. I can only hope that the darkness is mitigated by a larger screen in a darker room than I watched it on.

The story is also a little hard to follow, with very little to no character development and a load of new characters being thrown at you with again little to no introduction of who these people are or what their significance to the story is. The story itself is very fragmented, at times the past and present blending together so badly that it is hard to tell if you are witnessing a flashback or something occurring in the present.

Despite the videography issues, lack of character development (or at least some basic introduction of the characters by name), and fragmented story flow, it was a surprisingly entertaining film, especially for fans of the spy thriller genre. I personally am planning on seeing it in theaters tomorrow, if only to see if a change of venue helps some of the drawbacks of the film.

In a future article after the movie is released, I will hopefully get a chance to speak with the director and writer for the film.
