Auburn Mountainview High School Senior Mikayla Dayley turned her passion for fashion into a fantastic community outreach project. The Fairy Godmother Project was formed to provide formal attire for those who cannot afford it, allowing them to attend formal dances regardless of their financial situation.
We managed to catch up with Dayley during her hectic schedule (she is also a second year running start student at Green River College) to see how the Fairy Godmother Project has been growing.
Auburn Examiner: How many people used the Fairy Godmother Project in the first formal dance season?
Mikayla Dayley: For Prom of 2018 we helped about 15, but when popularity picked up in fall there were about 45 people, including a couple of guys.
AE: How many individuals have used the project since it began?
MD: I would say a little more than 60.
AE: Is there a primary school that students utilizing the project attend?
MD: I would say most are from Auburn Mountainview, but we have helped people that live as far away as Granite Falls.
AE: How many donations have you received throughout the life of the Fairy Godmother Project?
MD: We have received about 100 dresses.
AE: How has the feedback been from the community?
MD: It’s been Amazing! We now have local store owners that have assisted us or offered their assistance.
AE: How do you feel continuing the project?
MD: I feel [great] about continuing the project. I am planning on staying local for college, so there’s no reason to stop. This project has been a big part of my life, and I honestly can’t think of life without it at this point.
AE: When we last spoke you had hoped to add make-up and hair to the project, were you able to?
MD: We actually have had someone to volunteer to do braiding.
AE: What do you hope to see with the project this coming prom season?
MD: To help more girls have the best prom ever without having to worry about the cost of a dress.
AE: Are there any sizes or styles you are really in need of for the Fairy Godmother Project’s closet?
MD: Dresses 12 and up, and long. A lot left during the homecoming season.
AE: Any accessories you could really use?
MD: Clutches and necklaces with earrings. [We really need clip-on earring] too. A lot of girls don’t have their ears pierced.
AE: Are you still the primary person organizing the Fairy Godmother Project?
MD: Yes, but my mom, [Kim Dayley], has helped out a bunch.
AE: How long do you see yourself maintaining the Fairy Godmother Project?
MD: Indefinitely!
AE: If someone wanted to volunteer to help you with the project, what would be the best way they could assist?
MD: When we grow, we would love assistance with being a “stylist ” to help a bunch of girls or guys get fit for the dresses, bringing dresses to the dressing room, etc. as well as sharing the Fairy Godmother Project with anyone that might need assistance.
AE: How would you like to see the project expand?
MD: In a dream world, it would be nice to give the “customers” a limo or a nice ride to their prom and gift cards to a nice dinner.
AE: Do those utilizing the project get to keep the dress and/or any accessories that they get from the Fairy Godmother Project?
MD: Yes, absolutely!
“I would just like to give a big thank you to everyone! If it wasn’t for this such supportive community, this project couldn’t even be possible,” said Dayley.
