Friday Feels: Spreading Kindness and Cheer on Lea Hill

‘Tis the season for spreading cheer (we know it’s very much needed this year), and a decorated roundabout on Lea Hill in Auburn is doing just that.

As you make your way down 124th Ave. on Lea Hill, you’ll notice an island sitting in the center of the circular intersection at 304th St. The trees on the island have been adorned with colorful ornaments. Large white posters are scattered around the decorated trees, encouraging passersby to have a ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Happy Holidays.’ Two signs read, ‘you are loved’ and ‘you are important.’

Jessica Ottesen-Murph shared a post on a Lea Hill community Facebook group sharing gratitude for the festive island. “Not sure who decorated the roundabout on 124th, but thank you! It made me smile this morning.”

Forty-one others filled the comment section with photos and praise. “It’s beautiful- I thought the same thing. Whoever did it, bless you.” One comment read, “I passed by yesterday, made me smile! Thank you to a very caring person… whoever you are.”

Ottesen-Murph said she drives by the roundabout often. She doesn’t recall it ever being decorated in previous years, although she admits the world’s current state may have led her to notice the holiday spirit more this season. “It has been an emotional roller coaster since March. When we got shut down again in November, all I can think about was Christmas.” Ottesen-Murph said, “I know it’s not about the presents. However, kids see it differently.”

Ottesen-Murph said that although her family has been fortunate, many other families may struggle to keep their homes and businesses intact.

“It’s heartbreaking. Seeing the decorated roundabout that day literally made me tear up. We all need to be encouraged and loved, more now than ever, even from a stranger.”

It’s unclear which one of Santa’s elves visited from the North Pole to spread such cheer (has anyone seen Buddy lately?). Rumor has it, though, a few generous individuals in the community are responsible.

“I don’t know who they were, but it was two ladies decorating it the other day when my daughter and I drove by,” reads a comment in the Facebook thread.

Whoever you are, thank you.

“I am glad everyone loved it so much,” said Ottesen-Murph, “We can call them the Christmas angels.”
