Here is a really GOOD definition of the word ‘phony’. And a secondary definition of the word, ‘pointless’.

The City of Auburn posts signs all over town telling people, “If It Goes Up, or Blows Up, it’s Illegal in Auburn”.

The city also sends officers all over town to make sure this law is enforced. They probably catch less than five percent of the people actually doing Go Up or Blow Up.

Meanwhile, just up the hill from town, the Muckleshoot Tribe has one of the biggest fireworks supply chains going. And yes, you can get the REALLY illegal stuff, the items far and beyond simple M-80’s. The tribe also contributes heavily to events in the city from time to time. I don’t have a problem with any of that, except for the ‘beyond simple M-80′ stuff. I DO have a problem with the phoniness of the whole setup. City says it’s illegal to set them off, but city is also buddy-buddy with one of the biggest suppliers of hard core fireworks in Washington State. It’s too much of a temptation for people. There’s something weird about the whole thing.

In town on holidays, everyone and his brother set off mass quantities of the same illegal fireworks they just bought up the hill at the Reservation. IN Auburn. And although I don’t think the Auburn cops do this anymore, some of them used to provide security to the fireworks stands up there on their off-duty hours for extra money. Now they spend their holiday time chasing the folks IN setting off the fireworks so freely available right in Auburn.

Does something seem screwy to you about this whole system? Sure does to me. And the law doesn’t work anyway. Anyone in Auburn can tell you that it always sounds like the Fourth of July in Auburn…ON the Fourth of July, and New Years’ Eve as well. The law isn’t working, and it probably never will. The City of Auburn should simply admit defeat, and make most fireworks legal again.
