Auburn teacher Kad Abraham is helping to organize a three-day peaceful demonstration in support of Black students and teachers. Participants are expected to remain on the sidewalks, practicing social distancing, displaying signs with positive messages of encouragement.

“Educators from the community are coming together this week for three days,” said Abraham. “We are showing up to support our community members who live in Auburn and surrounding communities. Our students and community members need their voices to be heard and they hear your silence. This event will bring awareness to our cause and let our children know that we are speaking out for them and care about justice and peace.”

A teacher at Rainier Middle School, Abraham explained that “during these trying times, it can be easy to overlook the concerns of our students and this should not be the case. As an educator, my main goal is to ensure my students are safe and feel comfortable in my classroom. As I observe world events, it would be a detriment to my students if I did not speak out for them.”

Abraham noted, “this is not a protest against police officers or other government officials.”

The demonstration will be held for three nights from Wednesday, June 10 to Friday, June 12. Each night’s demonstration will occur from approximately 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. “We will be meeting on Auburn Way N and 8th St NE for all three days, rain or shine,” said Abraham. “We will have poster-making materials to lend out as well as water and snacks!”

Full details can be found on the demonstration’s Facebook event page. Abraham has outlined a list of “How to Help,” “What to Do,” “What Not to Do,” and other notes for those interested in participating.
