On January 26, 2021, Apple released an important security update for both iPhones and iPads. The update has several bug fixes. The update also patches recently discovered security exploits that can compromise your device.

The security exploits impact the iOS Kernel which can allow a malicious application the ability to take control of your device by elevating privileges.

The update also addresses a security exploit that impacts the WebKit, allowing a remote attacker to be able to cause arbitrary code execution.

The update is available for: iPhone 6s and later, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation).

How to easily update your device:

  • To check to see if you have the latest update, go into the “Settings” App on your device.
  • Scroll down to the “General” option and tap on it.
  • The 2nd option from the top, under General settings, will say “Software Update,” tap on it.
  • If your device is up to date you will see a message that says, “iOS 14.4 – Your software is up to date.”
  • If your device is not up-to-date it will say, “iOS 14.4 includes improvements and bug fixes for your iPhone.”
  • You can update by tapping on the “Download and Install” option on this page. See note below before running the update.

NOTE: Make sure your phone is plugged in and charged before running any updates. The Apple iOS updates will not install if your battery is low. This is to prevent your device from shutting down in the middle of the update, which could cause problems. Also, the update is between 300 MB and 500 MB depending on the device model. If you do not have enough room on your device for the update you will receive a warning at which point you’ll have to clear some memory before proceeding.
