COVID-19: Give Your Brain a Break

Mental health is just as important as physical health.  Obsessively reading updates related to COVID-19 (coronavirus) can wear you down.  It’s important to stay informed, but you don’t want to become overwhelmed.

While it is very easy to speculate and become worried about the unknown, it is important to maintain a positive sense of hope and outlook on the future.  Focus on aspects of your life you can control and don’t dwell on negative, hypothetical situations.

Here’s some tips to help you stay health, mentally and physically:

  • Limit yourself to verified and trusted information sources (the CDC, WHO, WA State Public Health, Seattle-King County Public Health, City of Auburn, Office of Gov. Inslee).
  • Limit the amount (time or number) COVID-19 updates you read daily.
  • Social distancing or quarantining doesn’t mean isolating.  Stay connected to friends and family through phone calls, text, facetime/Skype, and social media.
  • The CDC recommends folks “limit exposure to social media if not used to communicate and connect with loved ones.”  We have seen an overwhelming amount of false information, conspiracy theories and dismissive statements posted on all social media platforms. This can lead to confusion and panic.   Again, limit your information consumption and make sure the the coverage you do consume is credible and based on facts, not on rumors or speculation.
  • The CDC also reminds us to “take care of your body. If your gym or normal exercise facility is closed, get outside or do an at-home workout. It’s easy to throw healthy routines out the window during emergency situations, so make sure to eat healthy, drink lots of water, wash your hands and sleep well.”If you check YouTube, many fitness creators are producing home routines (for free).
  • Go Outside! Enjoying fresh air in the comfort of your backyard, porch or balcony is still being responsible.  Staying inside 24/7 for multiple days isn’t good for you.  If you are unable to get out, be sure to open a window.

And lastly, enjoy these cute animals.  Because we know you need something positive that will give your brain a break.
