Courthouse Security Focus of Upcoming King County Committee Briefing

“Although they have the highest density of government services in Seattle, the blocks around the King County Courthouse are the least safe blocks in King County”, said King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, Chair of the Government Accountability and Oversight Committee (GAO). Security concerns surrounding the Third Avenue entrance to the King County Courthouse will be the focus of another briefing at the King County Council’s GAO Committee.

In recent years the courthouse has emerged as a center of gravity for violent crimes perpetrated upon jurors and courthouse staff. Even former Sheriff John Urquhart was nearly assaulted by a man wielding scissors in late 2017, an incident that was caught on camera by courthouse security. The hearing will update councilmembers on efforts by local and regional officials to improve public safety.
