Coming up at King County Council Sept 9-13

king county council, king county metropolitain councilThe big story next week will be the first discussion of a hotly debated new proposal from Executive Constantine and Mayor Durkan to create a regional homelessness authority. The Regional Policy Committee meets at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn released the following statement this week concerning Executive Constantine and Seattle Mayor Durkan’s proposal to create a regional authority on homelessness:

“We can do better than more bureaucrats and more taxes. This new layer of government would be undemocratically structured, lack representation of suburban cities, and be yet another expense on taxpayers. The homelessness crisis won’t be solved by pushing Seattle’s failed policies to the surrounding region. Elected officials need to stop passing the buck on homelessness and to start making the tough choices our constituents deserve.”

Wednesday’s full council meeting also has a few headlines to watch. The council will vote on legislation that would require sex trafficking awareness training for for-hire drivers, including those with Uber and Lyft. The measure responds to increasing use of ride sharing apps to deliver human trafficking victims to their buyers.

The full council will also vote on key updates to the Conservation Futures Program, a decades-old tax program that protects King County green spaces and other valuable outdoor space from development. And CM Larry Gossett will introduce a measure aimed at keeping more affordable housing in the unincorporated areas of Skyway and North Highline, including White Center. It will be referred to the Health and Human Services Committee.

The full council meets at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

All meetings are held on the 10th  floor of the King County Courthouse unless otherwise stated. View meeting agendas and legislation here.
