Wrap up your holiday season with this classical ballet. The Nutcracker is the story of a girl named Clara, who receives a nutcracker from her godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. That night, her Nutcracker comes to life and wages a fierce battle with the mouse king. Clara saves the Nutcracker by throwing her slipper at the mouse king. With the mouse king distracted the Nutcracker is able to kill and defeat the Mouse king. The Nutcracker and Clara travel through an enchanted snow forest to the Land of the Sweets. They are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and the other candies from around the world. The divertissements dance to celebrate Clara’s heroine actions. Finally, Clara has to say goodbye and awakens back at home with her Nutcracker. children's dance theater, nutcracker, auburn dance, auburn ballet, nutcracker ballet

Children’s Dance Theater opened in September of 2007 in Auburn Washington. The studio’s goal is to provide age-appropriate choreography, costumes, and music that challenges dancers to achieve their personal best in a positive and rewarding environment. There are a variety of class styles offered and each program is tailored to promote fun and a love of dance. Since inception, the studio offered a winter recital themed a Taste of the Nutcracker, however when the business expanded to include a Federal Way location in 2014, owner Stephanie Cox knew that it was time to take the show to the next level. “We were fortunate enough to receive a grant that helped us take our production from a humble student show and over time it has become a polished local treasure.”

Each year, Children’s Dance Theater’s production has received rave reviews from its audience members who are astounded by the high caliber performances. “We’ve had more that one audience member tell me our show is better than the one in Seattle.” Says Stephanie Cox.

This year’s ballet production has grown to include a cast of close to 83 performers ranging from the age of 5 through 45. While most of the dancers are from Auburn and Federal Way, there are families from all over the Puget Sound including, Covington, Tacoma, Fife, Kent, and Bonney Lake/Sumner. “We are thrilled to be performing at the Sumner Performing Arts Center this year. The larger stage and audience capacity are exciting new opportunities for the dancers and we are excited to share our love of this holiday classic with a new community.”

This enchanting production brings to life the classic tale featuring backdrops by Maureen Wilhelm and Cynthia Olson, amazing sets by David Cox and beautiful costumes.   “In addition to fresh new sections of choreography, we have beloved characters like Madame Bon Bon, the Mouse King, and the Sugar Plum Fairy.” says Stephanie Cox.  “It’s very colorful, and the dancers work very hard to be entertaining, poised and graceful. It’s so much work but we all love it.”
