The public is invited to a special Womxn’s History Month forum that will focus on trailblazing womxn from around King County and their continuing impact in the region:

“I am pleased to be co-hosting this event in its fourth year. The issues facing women today are unique, but so much can be learned from the stories of the battles that have already been waged on behalf of gender equity,” said Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, who will be joined by Council Vice Chair Claudia Balducci and Councilmember Kathy Lambert at the forum. “Not only is this an opportunity to recognize the work of our panelists, but their stories will have the power to help us think more intentionally about how we can advocate for policies and cultures that are inclusive, impactful, and just.”
“Our state has been a leader in the number of women serving in elected public office at all levels. I appreciate and respect the growing number of women who are dedicating their lives to public service and they serve as an inspiration to the next generation of women leaders,” said Lambert. “While much work has been done to remove some of the obstacles women face in the workplace, there is still much more to do and we must continue to increase awareness of these challenges.”
“It’s always humbling to reflect on those who have come before us—the trailblazers, the women who stepped up to make it possible for us to hold office today—and to remember that we are a part of their heritage,” said Balducci. “We honor their legacy when we serve our communities well and work to ensure that future generations of women know there is no limit to what they can achieve.”
The theme of this year’s forum, “Womxn who lead,” is an opportunity to celebrate those womxn who have been leaders on an international, regional, local, and community level and explore the work that is still being done to increase equity and opportunity.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and Rachel Smith, King County Deputy Executive and Chief of Staff will provide opening remarks, which will be followed by a panel discussion that will include:
- Aretha Basu, community organizer and Legislative Aide to Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda
- Cindy Domingo, author, activist, and Chief of Staff to King County Councilmember Larry Gossett
- Colleen Echohawk, Executive Director of the Chief Seattle Club
- Mitzi Johanknecht, King County Sheriff
- Estela Ortega, Executive Director of El Centro de le Raza
The forum is co-hosted by Councilmembers Jeanne Kohl-Welles, Kathy Lambert and Claudia Balducci,
the King County Women’s Advisory Board and the King County Council’s Legislative Branch Equity and Social Justice Team.
