Re-elect Nancy Backus campaign logoAuburn Mayor Nancy Backus Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus is announcing her re-election bid for a third term as mayor. Backus first took office in 2014 and has led the City of Auburn through major downtown redevelopment, increased response to homelessness, response to a global pandemic, responded with urgency to the demands for social justice and advanced the City’s equity and inclusion initiative.

“In 2019, we were finally able to make official and fund the Inclusive Auburn initiative,” said Backus. “With goals to eliminate systemic causes of disparities, racial and otherwise, in the City of Auburn; promote inclusion and create opportunities for full participation for every resident and business in the City of Auburn; and reduce, and eventually eliminate, disparities of outcomes in our community.”

Backus is known as a consensus builder and has consistently developed strategic partnerships with schools, businesses, public safety, community and non-profit groups to improve the lives of Auburn residents.

“Because Auburn is a community that prides itself on working together our ability to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic was made easier,” said Backus. “While this crisis has deeply affected so much of our lives and so many are suffering we have been able to respond in ways I never would have imagined because of the strength of those partnerships.”

Backus is a person of her word. In her last campaign she committed to strengthen Auburn’s economic growth, protect quality of life and invest in better transportation and has delivered on those promises.

Since taking office Auburn has continued to strengthen its economy, has faced down the homelessness and opioid crisis by working across the region to bring resources and solutions to these complex problems while also continuing to invest in the City’s parks and recreational opportunities and has ensured that King County Metro, Sound Transit and Pierce Transit provide equitable service levels to south King County’s transit-dependent residents.

“Like any city Auburn has areas that can be improved,” she said. “But this is still a job I love and it would be my honor to serve another term as Auburn’s mayor.”

Seems the homeless crisis is worse than it’s ever been here in Auburn.
