I’m not sure if you’re aware, but we had a little parade here in Auburn a couple of weeks ago. Though it called for rain it was a brisk, beautiful day for the annual parade and observance. Veteran and military groups, dignitaries, marching bands, remarkable vehicles, and community groups made their way down Main street, entertaining parade-goers with a steady stream of all things patriotic.

Thank you again to all of our military service members past and present, veteran services and groups, and all of the parade’s participants. Auburn’s veterans parade is always an amazing event! And if you didn’t get enough parade this month, you only have to wait just under two weeks for the Lighted Santa Parade!

TJ has been involved with the Marine Corps League since 2003. He has dedicated the last 19 years working to promote and provide relief for veterans trhoughout Washington State and the entire country. He has held leadership positions at the local and state level and now is the National Jr. Vice Commandant for the Marine Corps League. He is projected to be the National Commandant in 2025. He travels all over the state and country, investing his time to promote the interests and to preserve traditions of the United States Marine Corps. He has received many awards including the Chapel of Four Chaplains Bronze Medallion, Marine of the year for local, state and Division levels and the highest MCL award the Citizen Gold Medal. | 25 | Nino Gray – 2022 Outstanding Service to Veterans Distinguished Service Award Recipient | Let’s say hello to Nino Gray, a 2022 Distinguished Service Award Winner. Nino is in his fourth season managing Seattle Seahawks military engagement programs. He served in the United States Army Infantry for 7 years before receiving an honorable discharge after suffering an injury. Nino represents the best in terms of the WDVA’s commitment to veterans, and their families. He has built & maintained relationships with local military bases, creating opportunities for military personnel to engage with the team through various unique experiences. Nino has led efforts for supply drops, playground builds, job fairs and mental health summits. Nino worked to facilitate over $500,000 in grants for these nonprofits.He is an active member of the local chapter of “Merging Veterans & Players” (MVP) which unites NFL alumni and veteran service members. Nino is a soldier who nearly lost his life when his Stryker was destroyed by a 400 lb. IED. He suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, and severe leg injuries. That experience along with his resilience and imagination have made Nino the perfect individual to lead the military programs for the Seattle Seahawks. Outstanding! She is currently the Washington State President for the Association of the United States Army. The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to members of the armed forces of the United States, who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy. | 67 | Jim DeMott – U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. | Here comes Jim DeMott, District Commander of the United States Submarine Veterans Incorporated. The purpse of the organization is to perpetuate the memory of their shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. In the Pacific Northwest, there are over 650 men and women who are members of the Submarine Veterans Incorporated. The membership ranges between World War Two veterans to active duty sailors, with six Bases or Chapters in Washington and Oregon. They provide way for all Submariners to gather for the mutual benefit and enjoyment, and engage is various projects and deeds that bring about remembrance of those shipmates who have given the ultimate sacrifice. This group includes military pilots who flew combat missions in Vietnam between 1961 and 1975. Aboard the flatbed trailer is a UH-1H Huey helicopter fuselage, owned by the Olympia Flight Museum. The UH-1 Huey was the icon for Americans in Vietnam and carried most U.S. Ground Troops. Missions included troop lift, medevac, re-supply, gunship combat support, search and rescue, and recon. Over 9,000 aircrew were lost in Vietnam combat. Fabulous display; thank you! |

| 109 | Puget Sound Honor Flight | Here comes the Puget Sound Honor Flight. Do you know what this amazing organization does? They take World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War Veterans on a trip to Washington, DC, taking them to the memorials that were built in their honor. What a great organization! Veterans…if this is something that sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to contact the Puget Sound Honor Flight, for more details. Three Veterans ride in their vehicle today, that all experienced “one more mission” honor flight last spring. In the front seat is Korean War veteran Joe Dubacher, who shipped out to Korea in 1951 with 8,000 marines and soldiers. Part of the HV Mortar Company in the 40th Infantry Division, he found in several battles including Heartbreak Ridge. In the back seat are two Vietnam Chinook pilots, CW04 Fred Loehmer and CW04 Vince Foulks, Both Veterans flew their first combat mission together in 1966 and both are recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross. A big thanks to the Puget Sound Honor Flight for all the great work they do! |

This Navy Unit was originally developed during and for the Vietnam War. These sailors were the most highly decorated of all Naval Units of the Vietnam War. The ‘active duty’ sailors from Bangor, Washington are manning the guns today. This operational 32 foot Mark Two PBR – Patrol Boat River – was manufactured in Bellingham, Washington…the same boat many of these men served on in the Vietnam War. Outstanding display! Many are restored and driving today. These cars have only three gears and drivers have to double clutch to down shift. Model A’s have mechanical brakes and a 40 horsepower engine. There are numerous body styles and colors but the fenders were always black. This group loves showing their cars and they are honored to support our Veterans today in this parade! |

| 174 | Valley Regional Fire Authority | Last, but definitely not least….please welcome the Valley Regional Fire Authority – YOUR local fire department; providing fire, emergency medical and rescue services to the communities of Algona, Auburn and Pacific. Leading the way is their Fire Chief, Brad Thompson. He is accompanied by VRFA Battalion Chief Gary Barker who served in the US Navy. Gary was a 2nd Class Petty Officer, stationed on the USS Ranger Aircraft Carrier in San Diego. Thank you Gary and Veterans of the VRFA! You are now looking at the VRFA’s new Tractor Drawn Aerial or TDA. This is an Ascendent 107 foot Heavy-Duty Tiller Aerial Ladder made by Pierce Manufacturing. The TDA is just over 60 feet in length and requires a second driver who steers the rear wheels from the back of the vehicle. The TDA is the most maneuverable aerial apparatus in the fire service. It allows firefighters to navigate tighter roads and deploy aerial equipment more quickly. The Valley Regional Fire Authority would like to thank our veterans and our active military personnel for their commitment to our country. |
