Peppered throughout Auburn are 16 utility boxes, transformed into public art. Artwork submitted by local artists was selected from 180 submissions and reproduced as vinyl wraps. These wraps were applied to utilitarian surfaces that are often targeted by vandalism.
“The goal of the project is to enhance Auburn’s public spaces by adding works of art by local artists,” explains the city’s Call to Artists for the project. “These pieces of public art can enhance the visual character of our city, promote community dialogue, turn ordinary spaces into community landmarks, and are accessible to everyone.”
This project was open to visual artists, illustrators, designers and otherwise creative community members residing in Auburn or the surrounding King and Pierce Counties. Any medium could be used for the original artwork, so long as it could be translated to the digital reproduction for the vinyl wrap.
The selection jury was compiled of Arts and the Public Works department staff and Business Improvement Area members.

“I feel honored to be one of the chosen artists to have my work on a utility box. I love that the city is adding color through art and can’t wait to see what other art pieces will be installed,” said Artist Dinah Rau.
David Bloomfield, or Starheadboy, creator of Jetpack Hedgehog shared that “a jetpack gives a Hedgehog unlimited means to explore the city. It makes me happy to know he’s out there in complete freedom, it’s what I wish for everyone. Thanks so much, City of Auburn for embracing him.”
Starheadboy recently collaborated with Jakobi, another familiar Auburn artist. Keep an eye out for some Starheadboy JAW Hearts around the Puget Sound!
