Auburn School District Looks to Fall 2020

Auburn School District Seniors are graduating this Saturday.  The official end to Kindergarten-grade 11 ends June 19. But does that mean the COVID-19 concerns for schools end, too? Not quite. The Auburn School District is already looking to Fall 2020. Superintendent Dr. Alan Spicciati sent a letter to district families with an update as to how they intend to tackle reopening school buildings.

“Dear ASD Families:

The school year officially ends June 19 for students in kindergarten through grade 11. Auburn School District seniors will graduate this Saturday. Though this year’s graduation ceremonies are not what we had planned, our high schools worked hard to prepare a memorable and fun celebration for each high school. I wish the class of 2020 the best!

As we near the end of this school year, planning to reopen schools next year is underway. We received guidance from the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) today outlining different scenarios and guidelines for the fall. In the coming weeks, we will evaluate the guidance from OSPI, the Department of Health, and Labor & Industries for when and to what extent we can open schools in 2020-21. It is encouraging news that Pierce County moved to Phase 2 and King County is in a modified Phase 1 of reopening.

Here’s what we are doing now to tackle the challenges ahead of us in planning for reopening.

We will convene five workgroups that will provide recommendations to an executive committee overseeing the plans for next year. We have representation from students, teachers, custodians, child nutrition, transportation, parents, school board members, principals and more.

The workgroups will be looking at five different areas:

• Inclusive Teaching and Learning Practices
• Teaching and Learning Logistics
• Student and Staff Wellness
• Student and Family Engagement
• Health and Safety

The workgroups will convene later in June and into July. The groups will prepare plans to address several different scenarios for the 20-21 school year. This work is of paramount importance as we prepare to reopen schools safely to serve our students, families, staff, and the community of Auburn.

I am grateful for our community during this pandemic. In very tough circumstances, our community has remained supportive, flexible, and focused on our students. As we plan with student and staff safety as our primary lens, we also will keep our mission statement, “In a culture of equity and excellence, we engage, educate and empower each student for success beyond graduation.” at the top of mind. We want to come back to school and are not wavering from our commitment to the youth of Auburn. This health situation is continually evolving and we are committed to not acting hastily in our decisions. We will provide updates to our community in the coming weeks.

Thank you again for your continued support.

Dr. Alan Spicciati
Superintendent”
