A letter posted to Auburn School District’s Facebook provides the latest updates for the 2020-21 school year. Five workgroups have been convened to provide recommendations to an executive committee overseeing plans for the next year.

ASD Superintendent Dr. Alan Spicciati states that the district is working to have students in classrooms this fall, though it will look very different.  An online option will be provided for families who want that choice.

Spicciati shared that the goal to have a plan ready for the community to review is mid-July.  A website has also been provided to keep the community updated on the planning process.

I hope you are enjoying summer break. I want to give you an update on our planning for the 20-21 school year. We are working to bring students back to school in the fall, with student and staff safety as our highest priority. Based on what we know today, we will have school in the fall, but it will look significantly different.

We have convened five workgroups that will provide recommendations to an executive committee overseeing the plans for next year. There is representation from students, teachers, custodians, child nutrition, transportation, parents, school board members, principals, nurses, and more. The workgroups are using the guidance from OSPI, the Department of Health, and Labor & Industries for when and to what extent we can open schools in 2020-21.

The workgroups are looking at these five areas:

Inclusive Teaching and Learning Practices
Teaching and Learning Logistics
Student and Staff Wellness
Student and Family Engagement
Health and Safety

Next week, the workgroups will make their preliminary recommendations. The executive committee and district administrators will evaluate the feasibility and logistics of the recommendations that will address different scenarios for the 20-21 school year.

Here’s what we know now:

We will have a fully online option for families who want that choice for their student.
Classroom capacity will be limited by the state requirement to keep a six-foot distance between students. We are examining all options to maximize in-person education, including a hybrid model for students to attend in-person part-time and do part-time work online.

We are planning for the possibility of having to switch from part-time in-person to full-time online, should the Governor close schools again.

We are in regular contact with the health department as we make plans for next year.

This work is of paramount importance as we prepare to reopen schools safely to serve our students, families, staff and the community of Auburn. Our target is to provide the community with an opportunity to review the plans for the 20-21 school year by mid-July. We created a website to update the community on the planning process.

We will continue to provide updates in the coming weeks. Thank you for your continued support.

Dr. Alan Spicciati
Superintendent”
