Eight people were killed on March 16 when a single gunman targeted three Atlanta area spas. Six of the victims are Asian, seven are female. Mayor Nancy Backus released the following statement last week in response to the shootings:
Mayor Nancy Backus
As we continue to learn more about the horrors of the Atlanta shootings and acts of violence against our AAPI communities, I wanted to share with you an important statement that your council and I will be reading into record during Monday’s council meeting.
As your mayor, I will not stand for violence or racist actions of any kind in our community. Auburn is a vast city, made up of people from every walk of life and every demographic. We are stronger for our diversity. We are better for our diversity. We are a community for all.
City Council and Mayor Statement
“The City of Auburn is a place where all people should feel welcome, and safe! This is an inclusive community and we have zero-tolerance for hate and racism. We must all condemn the acts of hate and violence occurring with the rising incidence of anti-Asian hate crimes in our country.
Advancing inclusion and belonging for people of all races, national origins, and ethnicities is critical to guaranteeing the safety and security of our community.
We stand in solidarity with members of the Asian community who continue to experience fear and intimidation and we pledge to do everything in our power to fight racism of any form in our city.”
The above information was obtained from the City of Auburn.
