The City of Auburn issued an announcement Monday updating the status of upcoming special events. Petpalooza, Kids Day, and the city’s 4th of July celebrations have been canceled.

“We recognize there is a lot of uncertainty around COVID-19 and we hope everyone is staying healthy and safe in these unprecedented times. As we continue to follow Public Health – Seattle & King County recommendations and direction from the State of Washington to help protect our communities from COVID-19, the City of Auburn has had to close many facilities and park spaces related to this global pandemic.

Governor Jay Inslee issued an extension to the STAY HOME, STAY HEALTHY order in Washington state which will now be in effect through May 31, 2020. Due to planning timelines for various large-scale community gatherings and summer festivals, the City has taken measures to cancel events that consistently see crowds between 12,000-15,000 people with no way to maintain physical distancing limitations.

It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that the following special events have been cancelled:

  • Petpalooza – Saturday, May 16, 2020 (the 3K/5K Fun Run that is a component of Petpalooza has been rescheduled to the Fall)
  • KidsDay – Friday, June 19, 2020
  • 4th of July & 4th of July Car Show– Saturday, July 4, 2020

The decision was not made lightly, but we ultimately feel this is in the best interest of the Auburn community and those vendors, sponsors, and service providers involved in the festival. Please know that we are committed to planning future community events and festivals at which time we are able to gather safely in large groups.”

A virtual Mutt Strut has been scheduled for Saturday, May 16th to help celebrate Auburn’s pets and encourage exercise.  This event is not a replacement for the postponed Dog Trot 3k/5k Fun Run, which will be held in the fall.  Find all the information to participate here.

Though the city has canceled these special events, Public Health – Seattle & King County has given approval for the City of Auburn to open and operate the Auburn Farmers Market.  The first day of the market, held at Les Gove Park, will be Sunday, June 7th.

“The Market will be allowed to open on a week to week basis with approval from Public Heath each week,” states a city announcement.  “Plans have been put in place for vendor and market staff health screenings, social & physical distancing measures, sanitation procedures, additional informational signage, and much more. You can find the approved Operations Plan approved by the Health Department at auburnfarmersmarket.org. The Market will initially open with a Phase One plan that will allow farmers, flower vendors, food, sanitation, and health vendors. When allowed by Public Health, Phase Two will allow the addition of craft vendors, and Phase Three will allow the addition of non-profit organizations, sponsors, and service vendors.”
