The ATF and NSSF are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the February 16 burglary of Coastal Farm and Ranch, in which 15 pistols were stolen. Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound has added up to $1,000 to the reward for information that leads to an arrest.

ATF Release for Coastal Farm and Ranch Burglary

An unknown male used bolt cutters and a pry bar to break through an outer and inner door of Coastal Farm and Ranch at about 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The suspect took 15 pistols and fled the scene in a waiting vehicle driven by a second suspect.

The suspect who broke into the store is believed to be a light-skinned male, about 6 feet tall and 160 pounds. He has a larger nose and thick eyebrows. He was wearing a black and white plaid jacket, True Religion jeans, and Nike Air Foamposite One metallic gold shoes.

The vehicle the two suspects departed in is a 2013 or newer dark blue compact/midsize SUV, possibly a Mazda CX-5 or Ford Edge, with chrome window trim, running boards and aluminum rims. The vehicle was also missing its front license plate.

“We believe these firearms are most likely still there in the area, and are a threat to the safety of the community until they are recovered, and the perpetrators are taken into custody,” explained Jonathan T. McPherson, ATF Seattle Field Division Special Agent in Charge. “We ask if that you know who took part in this brazen burglary, or know where any of the firearms are, you call ATF or your local law enforcement agency. You can also submit a tip online or via e-mail.”

This brazen thief will eventually be caught. I am almost sure of it, and I will tell readers why and how. All the stolen weapons have serial numbers. The thief will attempt to sell at least SOME of the weapons, and he will probably succeed in getting rid of some of them. And from that point on, he will have to worry if the next knock on his door is from Federal agents. This will go on for years.

Sooner or later, someone will get caught with one of the guns. And once the serial numbers pop up on the stolen list, the ATF will come visit the person who was caught with that gun. It can’t be registered, and all the guns are on the national stolen list now. The ATF agents will tell the person who was caught with the gun that he can either say where he got it, or they will hold him for the crime you just read about in this article. This person will undoubtedly say where he got it, because the penalty for possession of a stolen gun is a lot less than for burglarizing ALL the guns in question. And sooner or later…someone is going to be caught with one or more of these weapons.

What this thief doesn’t understand is that once that gun is on the stolen list, he has to trust anyone who buys one of his stolen guns, and that this trust must go on forever. Filing off the serial numbers won’t work either. Gun manufacturers place ID’s on pistols in more than one spot, sometimes in very sneaky places, too. And there are ways to read the numbers these days, even if you try filing off the numbers.

The smart thing for this thief to do, unless he wants to get caught down the road, maybe even years later…is to gather up all the weapons he stole and figure out a way to turn them in before he starts trying to sell them. It was totally useless thievery, especially stealing them from a licensed Federal gun dealer. There is no long road to tracing these weapons. They went from the manufacturer, to the store, and then to the thief. Other than the store, they have had no previous owners, making them easy to trace as stolen. If he isn’t willing to turn himself him, he should turn in the guns as soon as he can. Otherwise, somewhere down the road he will eventually be caught. It’s almost a certainty.
