The Auburn School District sent a letter to district families late Monday afternoon with an update regarding in-person learning. ASD Superintendent Dr. Alan Spicciati shared he is “happy and excited to announce we will begin our gradual return to in-person instruction on March 3.”

The district’s ability to begin this return is based on the Washington State Department of Health revised K-12 Schools 2020-2021 GuidanceAs was previously outlined, students in preschool through second grade will be the first to return to in-person instruction.

“With stable community health rates, we will then bring back grades 3-5 on March 15,” Spicciati said. Plans for the return of students grades 6-12 are currently being worked on. There is no set date for the return of students grade 6-12; the district is currently working on those plans.

In an effort to answer questions from the ASD community, the district is hosting host three Family Town Hall meetings via Zoom the week of February 22.

Dear ASD Families:
The day many have been waiting for after a long 11 months is finally here! I am happy and excited to announce we will begin our gradual return to in-person instruction on March 3.

We will begin with students in preschool through second grade on March 3. We are able to start our return based on the Washington State Department of Health revised K-12 Schools 2020-2021 Guidance. With stable community health rates, we will then bring back grades 3-5 on March 15.

We are working on plans to bring back grades 6-12. We do not have a date yet for these grade levels, but we are committed to doing so. We are able to bring elementary students back because the health data is trending favorably. If the trends continue, we will be able to bring back secondary students, too.

I know there are a lot of questions about both the elementary hybrid program and the Auburn online program. We will provide as much information as possible. We will host three Family Town Hall meetings via Zoom the week of February 22. Please note, you will need to create a free Zoom account to attend the Town Hall meetings. Interpreters will be available.

The dates and times for the Family Town Hall meetings are:

Wednesday, February 24, 7-8 p.m.
Thursday, February 25 Noon-1 p.m.
Friday February 26 8-9 a.m.

I am tremendously proud of the distance learning program we implemented during this pandemic. Our community pulled together in amazing ways. But as we all know, in-person instruction is so important and is critical for social, emotional, and equitable learning for families that choose it. We are happy to be able to bring back students in hybrid.

Here is some key information as we launch hybrid at the elementary level:

• By Friday, February 12, we will communicate morning, afternoon and class placements to families.
• Where applicable, students in grades K-5 will be switched to their new classes in Skyward on March 2.
• The ASD is working on a plan for rapid antigen testing (test results available in 15 minutes) through a partnership with Seattle Children’s Hospital. More information coming soon.
• In addition to daily wellness screening, families will complete a one-time acknowledgement of the rules and expectations for students attending in hybrid.

This is an exciting time for the Auburn School District. Districts around the country and around the state have successfully implemented a hybrid model. We are confident our systems will support a safe, healthy learning environment.

For more information on health and safety, please visit the ASD website. If you have questions, please email communications@auburn.wednet.edu.

Sincerely,
Dr. Alan Spicciati
Superintendent
