At the March 12, 2018, meeting, the Auburn School District Board of Directors recognized Karine Rasmussen, instructional specialist at Gildo Rey Elementary, as the outstanding staff member of the month. Auburn Mountainview High Senior Wendy Mordo was recognized as the outstanding student of the month.
The ASD has been lucky to have Rasmussen in the district for her entire 16-year teaching career. As an instructional specialist, she helps teachers by managing and analyzing data, writing curriculum, co-planning, and co-teaching. Rasmussen is particularly involved in the development and support of new teachers. Before transitioning to her current position, she taught third, fourth and fifth grade.
“I love being able to make a difference for kids and to give them hope for the future,” she said.
Rasmussen earned her bachelor’s at Western Washington University and her master’s in literacy at City University.
As a lead member of the dance team, ASB executive officer, and choir officer, Mordo is very involved in school activities. She does not let her extensive extra-circulars distract from her academics, carrying a 3.18-grade point average. Further shining academically, Mordo has taken seven advanced placement courses in addition to science and other advanced courses.
Mordo’s passion for sports medicine combines her activities and academics. She puts in many hours training athletes and is passionate about helping others. She will compete at the Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Competition in medical terminology this spring.
Teacher Brian Lovejoy said, “My favorite part about Wendy is that she is genuinely nice. She works well with others and is willing to help out any time.”
In addition to her involvement with school activities, Mordo is also a great asset to the community. She is a Younglife leader and volunteers in her church with outreach programs. She will graduate in June and attend Grand Canyon University to major in either psychology or counseling.
