All U.S. Flags to Half-Staff March 25 in Honor Of Deputy Dom Calata

Governor Inslee is deeply saddened by the death of Pierce County Deputy Sheriff Dominique (Dom) Calata, 35, and directs that Washington State and United States flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff in his memory on Friday, March 25, 2022. Deputy Calata died in the line of duty on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on Friday, March 25, 2022.

Other government entities, citizens, and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.

Pierce County Sherriff’s Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata

According to Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP), “succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day while members of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department SWAT Team attempted to serve an arrest warrant.”

Deputy Calata and Sergeant Rich Scaniffe were both shot and wounded when the subject opened fire on the SWAT officer present. The subject was subsequently killed by return gunfire. “Both deputies were transported to St. Joseph Medical Center. Deputy Calata succumbed to his wounds the following day and donated his organs on March 16th, 2022,” states the ODMP.

“Deputy Calata was a U.S. Army veteran and a Washington National Guard veteran. He had served with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department for 6-1/2 years and was assigned to the contracted Edgewood Police Department. He is survived by his wife and 4-year-old child.”

Procession Route:

The procession route has been established for the Celebration of Life for Deputy Dom Calata.

The procession will begin at the Washington State Fairgrounds.

Vehicles will begin west on 9th Avenue SW
Turn left on Fairview Drive
Fairview Drive becomes 9th Street SW
Turn right on 39th Ave SW
39th Ave SW turns into 112th St E
Arrive at 111 112th St E, Tacoma

The procession will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. and will end at approximately 12:30 p.m., so please plan accordingly if you live or work in the areas affected by the procession.

Additionally, 112th Street E will be closed from 7th Avenue E to Pacific Avenue S in the Parkland area from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The public is encouraged to line the route of the procession to show their support for Deputy Calata and his family.

The memorial is open to the public but family, friends, and first responders will receive priority for the limited seating available. Members of the public are encouraged to attend at the satellite location: Champions Centre, 1819 E 72nd St. in Tacoma.

As a reminder, when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff or half-mast, it should first be raised to the top for an instant, then immediately lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. Prior to lowering the flag, it should be raised once more to the peak, then lowered.
